Some conservation victories arrive on wings.
Others waddle in after dark.
New Zealand announced today that the population of the critically endangered kākāpō has reached 325—the highest of the modern recovery era, and possibly the first time the species has topped 300 in roughly 75 years.
The kākāpō is the world’s heaviest parrot: green, nocturnal, flightless, and magnificently ill-prepared for the arrival of mammalian predators. When the modern recovery program began in 1995, only 51 remained.
This year alone, 90 chicks survived to independence.
Flight remains optional.
Progress, apparently, does not.
