There are very few circumstances in which arriving uninvited, exhausted, and soaking wet improves one’s social standing. Being a barn owl appears to be one of them.
A British Army sailing crew racing around Britain and Ireland was about 70 nautical miles offshore when an exhausted barn owl tried to join them.
Her first attempts lacked finesse: she tried to land on a sailor’s head, fell into the sea three times, and finally collapsed on deck. The crew wrapped her in a towel, cared for her, and named her Little Reg.
Then they discovered she was female.
Little Regina was later handed over to wildlife rescuers for rehabilitation.
Even at sea, the paperwork eventually catches up with you.
