Public transportation relies on a remarkably fragile social compact: board in an orderly fashion, pay the fare, and try not to be livestock.
During the morning commute in Portland, two loose pygmy goats calmly followed passengers onto a city bus and settled into the journey with considerably more confidence than many human travelers.
The driver noticed the additional ridership, reopened the doors, and passengers gently ushered the pair back onto the pavement. The goats were later reunited with their owner.
No citation was issued. No fare was collected. And, by all accounts, neither goat attempted to play music through a speaker.
The route, regrettably, did not extend to pasture.
