In a medieval church in Halberstadt, an organ has been performing John Cage’s ORGAN²/ASLSP—“As Slow as Possible”—since 2001. Yesterday, an audience assembled for its seventeenth chord change: a single pipe was added, introducing an eighth note to the sustained chord and bringing the 639-year performance to approximately four percent completion.
The finale is scheduled for 2640. Tickets, one assumes, should not be purchased impulsively.
