A roughly four-tonne spent rocket stage, left on an uncontrolled trajectory after carrying two commercial landers moonward in January 2025, is believed to have struck the Moon late last night at about 5,400 mph. Astronomers recorded no definitive flash, so visual confirmation will likely arrive in the form of an orbital photograph of a fresh crater—an accidental experiment in impact science and a rather elaborate failure to make other arrangements.
