Today is the WNC Bigfoot Festival, when downtown Marion fills with believers, skeptics, researchers, vendors, costumed Squatches, and citizens prepared to demonstrate their qualifications in the annual Bigfoot Calling Contest.
There is also a 5K, because apparently one must be prepared for either discovery or pursuit.
Proceedings begin with an annual proclamation from Mayor Steve Little formally declaring Bigfoot the city’s official mascot.
Civic pride occasionally requires very large footprints.
