The first-ever Fat Marmot Week is underway at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, where the public is voting for yellow-bellied marmots that have spent the summer acquiring the sort of figure ordinarily associated with excellent cheese.
The competition runs through August 29 and is modeled after Fat Bear Week, but the annual weight gain is not cosmetic. Marmots spend the warm months building the reserves that will carry them through months of deep hibernation, while researchers use the spectacle to draw attention to one of the world’s longest-running studies of individually monitored mammals.
They have even established a G-rated OnlyFans account called OnlyMarms to help support the research.
At last, an internet competition in which putting on weight demonstrates excellent judgment.
