After five centuries away, Norfolk’s beavers have apparently decided the neighborhood is habitable again.
Two beaver kits have been recorded at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve — the first known young born to free-living beavers in Norfolk in roughly 500 years.
Their parents simply appeared along the River Wensum last winter, built themselves a lodge, and declined to explain where they had come from. Their arrival may have been natural; it may also have involved the peculiarly British conservation practice known as “beaver bombing,” in which someone releases beavers without quite troubling the authorities first.
Either way, the new residents appear comfortable. The kits are already swimming, exploring, and slapping the water with their tails when annoyed.
Nature has submitted its own planning application.
