Punch, an orphaned Japanese macaque, became an international favorite after zookeepers gave him a stuffed orangutan to practice the gripping skills a newborn monkey needs to survive. When the other macaques initially rejected him, he returned to the toy for comfort—but gradually found his place among a troop of about 50.
He turned one today. The plushie has largely been retired. The correspondence department, however, is flourishing.
