Science progresses because somebody, somewhere, is willing to ask a question everyone else was sensible enough to leave alone.
Last night in Zurich, the 2026 Ig Nobel Prizes honored genuine research into cockroach milk, buried underwear as a measure of soil health, the evolutionary history of kissing, splash-free urinals, and the aerodynamics of properly blowing one’s nose.
The awards celebrate work that first makes people laugh and then makes them think—which may, in fairness, be one of the better definitions of curiosity.
Civilization advances in many directions.
Some merely require more explanation to the funding committee.
