Beauty has always benefited from a sufficiently eccentric judging panel.
At the Sonoma County Fair this weekend, a six-year-old rescue pug named Jinny Lu won the 50th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.
It was her fourth attempt.
The name is deliberately outrageous, but the event itself is rather sweet: many of the contestants are rescue dogs, and organizers describe the competition as a celebration of individuality, compassion, adoption, and the considerable charm of animals unlikely to trouble a conventional breed-standard committee.
Jinny Lu leaves with a $5,000 prize and, briefly, her face on a limited-edition root beer can.
Persistence, apparently, is beautiful.
