Off the coast of Sicily, divers have identified a Roman merchant ship that sank roughly 2,100 years ago.

On the seabed lies a remarkable cargo of around 500 amphorae, the clay containers that once carried the goods of the ancient Mediterranean world. Dating to the late Roman Republic, the wreck offers a beautifully intact glimpse of the commercial life that moved through Sicily when it stood at the center of a vast trading network.

Archaeologists are now studying the site in hopes of tracing the ship’s route, its cargo, and the story of its final voyage.

Some deliveries are running slightly behind schedule.
