In Costa Rica, two young photographers built an elaborate macro setup to photograph a fer-de-lance — one of the region’s more venomous snakes.
Only afterward, reviewing the images, did they notice that a mosquito had been calmly drinking blood from the serpent’s head.
There is something almost reassuring in that.
A fer-de-lance can ruin your day. A mosquito can still ruin the fer-de-lance’s. No matter how formidable a creature may be, somewhere nearby is something smaller, less impressed, and perfectly willing to inconvenience it.
Hierarchy, it seems, is mostly a matter of scale.
